Lester Pearson’s Peacekeeping: The Truth May Hurt

Author and Canadian foreign policy expert Yves Engler was in Winnipeg on March 15, speaking at the Mondragon Bookstore and Coffee House about his newest book, Lester Pearson’s Peacekeeping; the Truth May Hurt. While the subject of his book was Lester B. Pearson, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Canada’s 14th prime minister, much of his presentation focused on current trends in Canadian foreign policy, and how we got there. According to Engler there is a direct line between Lester Pearson’s approach to foreign affairs and that of Stephen Harper and Pearson’s peacekeeping legacy does not hold up under scrutiny.

On Jan. 22, 2011, a panel discussion was hosted by CanPalNet Winnipeg and Students Against Israeli Apartheid to explore the present day and historical attitudes of Labour and the Left in Canada regarding Zionism and Palestinian liberation, with a particular focus on the New Democratic Party. Brian Latour, of Students Against Israeli Apartheid discusses the policies and practices of the Manitoba NDP, a party that has governed the province for the last decade. Writer and activist Yves Engler looks at the federal NDP, Labour and the actions of the federal Conservative government. The forum took place at the University of Winnipeg.
